Fuel Polishing

WHY CHOOSE A GULF COAST FILTERS INC. FUEL POLISHING SYSTEM?

Simply stated, the legendary GCF FPS outperforms the competition.  It enjoys a reputation around the world as The Best fuel polishing system.  Most competitive filters can remove water.  Some can remove fairly small particles; however, they clog up quickly.  Polishing fuel requires the ability to remove substantial amounts of water and particles, plus the ability to effectively remove moisture.  Gulf Coast Filters Fuel Polishing System is the Leader in Fuel Polishing because it does all this and more.  As a cost effective, eco-friendly system the GCF FPS provides peace of mind.

Here are some of the features you get with the Gulf Coast Filters Fuel Polishing System:

  • Depth type filtration – The element for the GCF FPS is a depth type filter which is substantial in size and can rid your fuel of vast amounts of particulate contamination.
  • Water separatorThe large water separator effectively removes over 64 oz. of water from the fuel before it gets to the filter element.
  • Below 1-micron filtration – The Gulf Coast Fuel Filter has been proven to remove particles as small as one micron in size.
  • Extend factory filter change intervals – The GCF FPS can extend auxiliary and factory fuel filters change intervals 4-5 times.
  • Computerized electronic water sensor – Many of GCF’s Fuel Polishing Systems feature a computerized water detection system.  Our ECBX (electrical control box) has a “Hyper-light” mounted on the cover.  This ECBX can easily be connected to an existing alarm system at the helm which allows early detection of water in your fuel.
  • No tools required for servicing – Whether it is to replace the element or to clean the baffle in the bottom of the filter, no tools are required.
  • Built to last – The Gulf Coast Filter Model F-1 is a 36-pound durable product made in the USA with US Steel.  Some customers have used the same filter housing for over 40 years.  Gulf Coast Filters products are simple, cost effective, and built to last.
  • Proven in the real world – Gulf Coast Filters has a proven track record. As a true world class Fuel Filter, the GCF F-1 is in service around the world in military applications, yachting applications, other marine applications, facility management applications and others.  GCF filter systems have been chosen by the US Army National Guard to clean the fuel in their 3-million-dollar M-1 Abrams Tanks.
  • Over 40 years of experience – Gulf Coast Filters, Inc. has the experience to back up its claims.  GCF knows how to prevent algae and other forms of microbial growth in diesel tanks. Keeping fuel water free, particulate free and analytically dry is what Gulf Coast Filters, Inc has done for years.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

The GCF Model F-1 and most Gulf Coast Filters, Inc. Fuel Polishing Systems (FPS) have the MH-1 Element at their heart*.

*Note:  We will discuss the MH-1 element in this section. However, there is another element, the GCF MH-2, which is used in the F-1 Jr. and the FPS 040B.  The primary difference between the two elements is their height with the MH-2 being approximately one-half the size of the MH-1. The information below applies similarly to both elements although not specifically stated as such.

Water is not the primary cause of downtime in a diesel engine. Rather, all contaminates combine to result in major problems. Water can effectively be removed with simple water-traps. Each GCF Model F-1 can remove over 62 ounces of water before the water even gets to the MH-1 element.  The MH-1 element used in the Gulf Coast Fuel Filter not only cleans to below 1 micron, but it essentially dries your fuel.

The GCF element is substantial in size and can rid your fuel of vast amounts of particulate contamination. The GCF MH-1 element is a depth-type filter that removes microscopic particles down to 1 micron and below from your fuel. Additionally, because of the controlled flow rate and the massive amount of cellulose fiber, it can remove moisture embedded in your fuel, thus eliminating the continued growth of harmful microbes.

Factory filter elements presently on your engine (primary and/or secondary filters) will last considerably longer when the GCF Fuel Filter element is serviced at the proper intervals. Indications of a need to service the element include excess smoking, loss of RPM, and/or an Increase of 2 – 3 inches above the clean filter reading. (The clean filter reading should be noted within 5 minutes of changing the element.)

The factory filter elements seldom have to be replaced when fuel is cleaned with a GCF Fuel Filter or Fuel Polishing System.  Additionally, the GCF Fuel Filter element is the same for all engines, thus only the MH-1 element is required. The need for factory filter inventory is drastically lowered thus reducing the cost, the space occupied, and the weight involved.

  1. Shut off the fuel polishing system motor and Inlet and Outlet valves as necessary.

  2. Place a drip pan under the filter to catch any spillage of fuel/oil.

  3. Remove the lid assembly and allow fuel to drain completely by opening the drain valve located at the bottom of the filter housing(s).

  4. Grasp the black element end plate and slowly remove the element assembly from the filter housing.

  5. Once the element assembly has been removed from the filter housing, clean the baffle assembly by spraying with a water hose or by removing and brushing.

  6. Unscrew and remove the element hold down assembly nut.  No tools are needed; the nut is installed HAND-TIGHT ONLY.

  7. • Remove the used GCF element from the GCF housing and set aside to drain prior to disposal
    • Close Drain Valve
    • Fill Canister 2/3 full of diesel fuel
    • Replace used MH-1 Element with a new GCF Model MH-1 Element
    • Once element is all the way into filter housing continue “capping off” with diesel fuel until canister is full (1/4” from top)
    • Properly dispose of the used GCF filter element, according to EPA guidelines

  8. Reinstall the lid assembly tightly using both hands.  DO NOT USE TOOLS OR CHEATER PIPES.

  9. Once the filter housing has been serviced, open the proper valves for fuel polishing.

  10. Start the GCF Fuel Polishing System and allow it to run for 5 minutes.  Then check the vacuum gauge to determine the clean filter reading.  The GCF F-1 should be serviced when the vacuum gauge increases by 2 to 3 inches above the clean filter reading.
